The CEC's food pantry
distributes about 1,000,000 pounds of food each year. Local grocery
stores donate food that has been damaged in shipment and is not
cosmetically attractive to have on their shelves. The CEC is licensed by
the Texas Department of Health as a non-profit food and drug salvage
institution. Damaged food is inspected using the Health Department
standards. It is either cleaned and put on the shelves or destroyed.
Low-income people come to the
front desk to register for food and check off the items they want from
that day's shopping list. Volunteers then shop the food for them.
The CEC's food pantry serves
low-income people in northeast Tarrant County, all families in the CEC's
Adopt-A-Family Program regardless of where they are living, and all
women in the Open Arms Home Program.
