Volunteer Opportunities

photo-volunteersEach year hundreds of volunteers donate their time to support the CEC’s mission and programs. Whether you’re an individual or a large group, there’s a volunteer opportunity that will fit your schedule and interests.

Food Pantry
Volunteers work between 8 am to 3 pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, between 8 am and noon on and Fridays and from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday nights.  Volunteers inspect, clean, sort, stock, select and box food.

Family Mentors
Volunteers encourage and mentor families with children in the Homeless Family Program.  Mentors are asked to make at least two phone calls per month for at least three months.  A one-hour training class outlines the expectations and boundaries for mentors. Mentors keep their family’s case manager informed on any important issues that they may learn about in the family. Mentors have a lot of latitude in terms of the amount of time they spend with their family. This is a very rewarding volunteer experience that can literally help change the direction that one family is taking.

Second Glance Resale Shop
Volunteers work in a retail environment greeting and assisting customers, stocking and helping with other tasks.  Volunteers are also needed in the back to sort, organize and stock a variety of items. Store hours are 10 am - 6 pm Monday-Saturday.  The store is located at 6308 Rufe Snow Drive in North Richland Hills.

Job Club
Volunteers assist our Education and Employment Director with resume preparation, interview skills, online job search and occupational skills training. Job Club is held at the CEC every Tuesday & Thursday from 10 am - 3 pm and 6:00 pm - 8:00pm on Thursday evenings.

Literacy for Life
Volunteers assist our Education and Employment Director in facilitating GED preparation and adult literacy classes.  These classes are held at the CEC every Tuesday from 7 pm - 9 pm and on Saturday from  10 am – 1 pm.

Life Skills Meetings
Volunteers assist our Education and Employment Director in teaching, planning, designing and facilitating life skills meetings for our families.  These meetings cover a variety of topics including home ownership, housekeeping, money management, etc.  Meeting times and places vary.

Food or Toy Drives
There is a year-round need for groceries in the Food Pantry (especially January-August). The CEC can provide a list of needed food items as well as suggestions for food drive contests and team building activities. Toy drives in November and December provide toys for the CEC Family Christmas event benefiting families in our programs.

Child Care
Volunteers are needed to assist with child care for Open Arms every Monday from 6:30 pm -8 pm as well as during weekly Literacy for Life classes (see above) and life skills meetings (see above).

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Volunteers work at the CEC between the end of January and Mid-April on Mondays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesdays 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays  from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers assist clients with tax return preparation using tax software. A combination of on-line and classroom training is provided. If you are comfortable using a computer and talking with people, this may be a very rewarding opportunity. United Way of Tarrant County and City of Fort Worth is coordinating the volunteer efforts for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. Please call 817-258-8062 or email Pennie Clayton,
